Avoid being captured by empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense!

In Colossians 2:8 God tells us through Paul to not "let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ."  So, what's the best way to avoid being captured by empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense?  The best way is to ground yourself in a deep understanding of the truth found in Christ.  In other words

  • Know the Truth: Spend time reading the Bible and getting to know the teachings of Jesus Christ.  This will help you discern what is true and what is false.
  • Seek Wisdom from God: Ask God for wisdom and discernment when it comes to understanding spiritual matters.  Pray for guidance and seek the counsel of other believers.
  • Test Everything: When you hear or read something that sounds like spiritual wisdom, test it against the truth of the Bible.  Does it line up with what Jesus taught?  Does it align with the character of God?  If it doesn't then run from it!
  • Avoid False Teachers: Be wary of people who claim to have secret knowledge or special spiritual powers.  False teachers often use impressive-sounding language to make themselves seem more important than they really are.
  • Stay Grounded in Christ: Keep your focus on Jesus and His teachings.  Don't get caught up in arguments or debates that distract you from the truth.

Remember, the ultimate goal is to live a life that is pleasing to God.  As you seek to follow Him, you will find that He will protect you from false teachings and guide you into all truth.
