Embracing Accountability: A Journey of Faith

by Mike Pratt on August 05, 2024

Hello friends!  Today, I want to expand on last Sunday's sermon about a pledge that can transform our relationship with God and with each other: the pledge of accountability.  This is part of our series, "My Pledge to God," where we explore different aspects of our faith and how we can live them out more fully.  Accountability isn't about perfection but about sincerely examining our hearts and committing ourselves to live out these principles with God's help.

  1. The Heart of Accountability

In Romans 14:11-12, the Apostle Paul writes, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.  So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.”  This scripture reminds us of our ultimate accountability to God.  Imagine standing before God, who knows every detail about you.  There's no need for pretense because He knows you better than you know yourself.  This isn't about facing a harsh judge but about being lovingly guided by our Heavenly Father, who desires our growth and righteousness.

Accountability to God is a blessing.  It means knowing that our actions matter and that our lives have meaning in the grand narrative of God's creation.  As we pledge to be accountable to God, let's draw near to Him with sincere hearts, submitting ourselves to His divine wisdom.

  1. Accountability to Others

Our accountability extends to our relationships with family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors.  Galatians 6:2 instructs us to “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”  This means stepping into another’s shoes, sharing their struggles, and holding ourselves accountable for how we impact their lives.

Consider your daily interactions.  How do your actions and words affect those around you?  Ephesians 4:25 urges us to “speak the truth with [our] neighbor,” reminding us to be truthful and reliable.  Our words carry power, and we must use them responsibly.  Matthew 12:36 warns that “on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak.”  Let's pledge to use our words and actions to uplift and honor those around us.

  1. Accountability to the Church

Finally, we are accountable to the Church.  The Church isn't just a building or institution; it's a living body of followers of Jesus.  Each of us, with our unique gifts, contributes to the wellbeing of the entire body.  1 Corinthians 12:26 says, “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.”

Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to “stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together.”  Being accountable to the Church means being active, engaged members who contribute to its growth and cherish its support.  It’s about 'being' the Church, a community reflecting Christ’s love to the world.

Reflect and Act

As we pledge to live with accountability, consider these questions:

  • How can you embrace accountability to God in your daily life?  Reflect on your actions and seek His guidance.
  • In what ways can you be more accountable to the people around you?  Consider how your words and actions impact others.
  • How can you actively contribute to the wellbeing of your church community?  Think about your unique gifts and how you can use them to serve.
  • Are there areas in your life where you need to seek forgiveness and make amends?  Take a step towards reconciliation and healing.
  • How can you encourage others to live out their faith more fully?  Be a source of support and inspiration within your community.

Let’s pray together: Lord, we understand that you’re not looking for perfection but for progress.  With all our imperfections, we pledge to be more accountable.  Help us to be accountable to You, to others, and to Your Church.  Walk with us, strengthen us, and lovingly guide us on this path of accountability.  In Jesus' name, Amen.
